I'm gonna have to have a yard sale before we move.

We have surplus furniture we don't want to take with us, excess crap spouse acquired for eBay that isn't worth the trouble of listing, not to mention assorted odds and ends that I have no memory of acquiring in the first place and don't want now.

Somehow I must locate my inner organizer and get this stuff pulled together. We're aiming for the sale to be March 30. We move on April 7th.

Any volunteers to assist with either?

(I can pay any helpers with pizza and firewood. How's that for incentive?)

Do you have freecycle in your area ?

Freecycle is a group that connect people thorughthe internet so that tose who have things they don't want can give them to those who want/need them. A neat recycling option that saves the hassle of a day spent yard saling things of which you just really want to see the end.

Many freecycle groups operate through yahoo group list servs.

But if you decide to go through with a yard sale..best of luck. if I were closer I'd come to help, I like pizza but the plane ticket might eat into your profits a bit more than you'd want.

We do. And we're members. But almost every time we've offered something, the person who says he wants it doesn't show up. I mean, we've even left stuff on the front porch, and the intended recipient never bothered to come pick it up. At this point, I'd rather have the yard sale and donate any leftovers to Goodwill.

I wish I could-I like garage sales. When we had ours last fall, we made up our minds that we would rather get rid of things than make money. So, if someone picked something up and looked at it, then put it down, I offered it to them at half price. If they still put it down, I told them to just take it--it was free. Got rid of a lot of stuff!!! ;-)

Good luck with yours!

That's my objective as well. More than likely I'll price stuff at what I'd like to get but take the first offer someone makes.

Actually, Easter Weekend is April 7th no? We'll be up in Auburn for Easter. I was planning on driving up Friday night anyway, so I can probably volunteer, me, DH and our ginormous SUV that Saturday.

Cool! We still have to verify things with our current landlord re: move out date, etc., but I should be able let you know for certain by next week.

sorry I'm not close enough to help - I'm actually pretty good at doing garage sales.

Ah well. It's the thought that counts though, right? Just beam that yard sale mojo my way on the day. :D

Here's some of my hints, in case you don't already know them:
1. Price everything in increments of a quarter - no dimes or nickels. If something is too teeny to be worth even a quarter, then "package" it with something else, or several of its kind, and sell the group for a quarter. That way, the only change you need to get from the bank ahead of time is a roll of quarters and a couple bundles of $1 bills.
2. A carpenter's apron/Home Depot pockets tie-on thingy is safer, and easier to manage, than a cash register box.
3. People try to peel off price stickers and then claim that something was labelled less. For any unusual items, keep a list in a notebook of what you priced them at. Where there are groups of items, make up a cheap paper sign (all paperback books 25 cents or 5 for $1).
4. A roll of masking tape costs much less than price stickers and makes equally good price tags. Sticks well but peels off well too.
5. If somebody offers you a ridiculously low price for something early on in the day, tell them "Come back at noon. If it's still here, you can have it for that price." About half the people wont take the chance, and will go ahead and pay what you're asking. And if they do't, and it is still there at noon, you'll be tired enough and sweaty enough to go ahead and sell it for much less.

Dang, I'd love to come and put Anthony underfoot

;)

But I don't think we'll be making it out to CA this year.

In addition to Freecycle, there's free postings through craigslist, whether selling, advertising the sale, or giving away whatever's leftover. Despite my recent experiences, I still think they're good.

You don't want to do that. He's so cute, somebody will snatch him up and want to buy him!

I'll consider craigslist. It's how I found where we're moving, so I know it works. ;)
