I bought a new iron today. Again. This makes at least the fifth steam iron I've bought in the last ten years. They're not cheap-o offbrand irons either. I can't figure out what the heck causes them to die so soon. They either start leaking or stop steaming. I don't drop them. I don't think spouse drops them. We buy the kind where we can use tap water rather than distilled water, so I don't think it's a mineral deposit problem. Maybe it's the fact that we iron every single day. Maybe we just wear it out.

Hmm. Definitely a [livejournal.com profile] non_entities post.

every once in a while, set it to steam and put a tablespoon of vinegar in the water bin and let it steam out. Sometimes the steam part gets clogged, the vinegar will disolve any build up.

I probably didn't do that often enough, considering the heavy use on the dang things.

Boycott ironing!

I still use the same iron my mom gave me when I moved out in college. Of course, "use" probably isn't the most appropriate word here. Which would be why my iron works, and yours doesn't.

Whoa!

You really applied for a job in SLO? (I was just scrolling through your old entries.)
Details please!

Yep. I really did. It's a low-level management position in the SLO office, and I made the BQ (best-qualified) list, which means the selecting official looks at my application. Although I have no real hope of actually being chosen, it was too good an opportunity to pass up. It isn't often that positions in California, much less the Central Coast, are open to accepting inter-region applicants. I also put in for a similar position in Oroville. The foothills would be almost as good as the coast.

It's a small world after all...

I had a phone conversation today with someone in the SLO office. Just think, that could have been you.
Well, no, it wouldn't have been...she was a case worker. But you could be her boss. She seemed like a nice person. ;-)

ALL home appliances = planned obsolescence. How else would you ever buy more, more, more, like all good Americans should?

If I actually used my iron, I'd still use distilled water, no matter what the packaging says. . .
