Thank you, everyone, for the advice and suggestions on a new camera.

I went to several different stores, including the only local camera store that isn't a chain, and tried out cameras by several manufacturers: Sony, Canon, Kodak. (I wanted to look at this Fuji camera in addition to the others under consideration, but no one in the immediate area sells Fuji, and I did NOT want to drive into Roseville or Sacramento today.) In the end, I went with a Kodak product:

Kodak EasyShare Z1012 IS

It was a little more than I originally intended to spend, but that extra $50 came with some nifty additional features: more options for different light levels, panoramic photo stitching, a deeper zoom.... Plus I like the way it feels better than any of the other cameras I handled.

Give me a few days to figure out all the bells and whistles, and then we'll see what mischief I can make with my new toy.

Awesome! My upgrade from the powershot was similar, although Im a Canon gal so I went with Canon. (Still shooting with a Canon, but Ive gone to the big boys now...and my wallet is feeling the pinch of all the different lenses...)

Yeah, I eyed those Canon Rebels, but I'm not ready to make that kind of commitment to this art form. Yet.

nifty! YAY!!

I'd love a new camera, but can not justify the expense just yet since we have 2 working digital cameras in the house, plus 2 cellphones with cameras. :)

can't wait to see your results!

It's been overcast and rainy since I bought the darn thing. I'd like to try it out for the first time on a sunshiny day. Coming soon, I hope.

Oooh NICE. It looks solid, too, which is something I'd be looking for too.

How many meggypixies?

10.1 meggypixies. And a 12X optical zoom, plus 5X digital. And all sorts of other nifty features I'm still trying to figure out.

That's a similar model to the one I bought around Thanksgiving. I tried it out really good at the beach in Florida last month and loved it. I still have a lot to learn with it, but it is fun!
