I have an audition coming up in a couple of weeks for the musical Candide. I'm mulling over which song to sing. I've narrowed it down to:

"All That Jazz" from Chicago
"As Time Goes By" from Casablanca
"Nowadays" from Chicago

I'm also considering "Art Is Calling For Me (The Prima Donna Song)" from The Enchantress. It's more operatic and less Broadway-y, but it's pretty, although a bit of a stretch in parts.

Truthfully, I'm leaning mostly toward "All That Jazz" but want to have a backup song prepared in case some other auditioner sings the same song.

What do you all think?

Good Luck!

I don't know those songs well, so I can only suggest going with the one you feel most confident about.

I vote for All That Jazz (I always sing along with that one-it brings out my sassy side--although I still haven't quite figured out the notes ;-)

Second choice is the one from Casablanca.

Good luck on the audition! Sounds interesting!

I'm fond of All That Jazz. :-)

I can only quote the instructor at my daughter's musical theatre class: prepare a ballad and an up-tempo.

I, personally, wouldn't recommend All that Jazz since it is overdone.

I have no musical taste or talent. The only song I recognize out of that bunch is All that Jazz. Given those two points, maybe you should listen to greedyreader when she says it's overdone.

Candide IS an opera! So something leaning toward the operatic would be a good plan.

I only know "All that Jazz" and "As Time Goes By", and between the two, I recommend the first, because it shows greater range and versatility, but the "overdone" argument is true.

I plinked out the melody to "Art" on the keyboard last night and decided I really liked it. But I've never sung it before and don't know it well at all. Still, I'll photocopy the music and take both pieces with me to choir tomorrow (our accompanist has agreed to rehearse me). We'll see how it goes. The audition is in less than 2 weeks, so I'm not sure I'll have it down well enough.
