I've been going through my Amazon book recommendations list, and marking the books I've already read as being ones I own. However, many of them are no longer in my possession, either because of BookCrossing or being disposed of in some other fashion.

Does anyone else do this? Do you delete the ones you no longer physically have? Or do you let them stay on your virtual shelf at Amazon to provide more nuanced recommendations?

For some reason, showing that I "own" them when I don't actually have them anymore raises an ethical dilemma. I just need to know if I'm being hypersensitive and overly analytical.

Personally, I leave them on my Amazon shelf. I figure that if I take them off, they'll end up on my recommendations page again and I'd rather see books I haven't read there. I think the "own" option is there mostly for our convenience anyway. Do people actually search these lists trying to find a book to buy from someone? If not, then I don't see any harm in marking books as "owned" even though I no longer have them.

In a way, you do own them... in a virtual way, on your virtual bookshelf! *grin*
