Among numerous other topics of conversation, the South Beach Diet came up this weekend. Three of the girls have used it with success initially, with two failing later because they reverted back to their old eating habits instead of following the healthy maintenance plan.

Does anyone out there have any experience with this particular plan?

Ok, seriously. :D I've not read the south beach diet book. My general opinion has always been that Diet is a four letter word. (Namely DIE with a T on it.)

The best plan is weight watchers, mainly because they TEACH you how to feed yourself with stuff you can find in the supermarket and hence in your own pantry. It creates a lifestyle change.

The problem with most programs (WW Excepted) is that if you stick to THEIR PLAN, they work. But they don't teach you how to fend for yourself, so once you get sick of the plan, you're back to you're own devices, which typically weren't that great to begin with. So, if you think you can STAY on the program, my understanding is the SBD (no not Silent But Deadly) is a decent one.

I've never had any luck at following anyone elses rules. I got rid of the baby weight using a combination of Now Your Cooking cookbook software and Fit Day software. The cookbook software showed me the nutritional ifnormation for the meals I made, and the fit day monitors my dialy consumption. When I have to type everything in, I'm less likely to stuff my face with a very large volume of cheese (mmm cheese) and more likely to eat things that are good for me. Both of these are self-starter type things, and I've always had an interest in food and nutrition, so it fit right to my lifestyle. My diet (as in the foods I eat) can still be improved, but the basic plan I've got going is working well.

Oh, also. I know a liscensed Dietician up in the Grass Valley area, so if you want to go that route (always the best choice IMHO) I can get you her name.

My hubby the doctor doesn't like it, and thinks it may actually be harmful in the long run, if that means anything to you.

I did it two years ago and lost probably about 15 pounds (I'm guessing, because I refuse to weigh myself). But I fell off the wagon after about 3 months and I've gained all the weight back (and then some). Softdrinks cannot exist without carbs and sugar. Okay, maybe they can, but they're certainly not happy.
I have the book, if you want to read it.

I know a couple of people who did for very very short periods, lost some weight and then regained. Don't know anyone who did it for more than one month, though.
