In case you were wondering, Mother's Day in the United States was not created by Hallmark, but by a West Virginia woman named Anna Jarvis, although the greeting card companies certainly hopped on it as quickly as they could. Out of curiosity, I did a web search and found several links explaining Ms. Jarvis's role, as well as providing unattributed information about the holiday's deeper historical background.

West Virginia Archives & History has more information about Anna Jarvis, and so does International Mother's Day Shrine.
Okay, enough useless web surfing for the day. It's beautiful outside and I've spent most of the day indoors (6 hours OT at the office today). Time to put on my shorts and work in the yard.
