There's a variety of things that can be "intersex" - the ones Bill mentioned, plus XY females (lack of testosterone stimulation in utero results in a male not developing as a male) and a few other genetic rarities. One of the things that makes life difficult for these people is that at birth, doctors try to assign one or the other sex, and sometimes do surgery right away to "force" the assignment, and then at adolescence/puberty, when the "right" hormones don't start up, if the child wasn't already miserable and feeling all wrong, that will do it.
